Fulvestrant (Fulvenat) is a selective estrogen receptor degrader (SERD). It treats hormone receptor-positive (HR+), HER2-negative breast cancer. This cancer depends on estrogen for growth.

Fulvestrant blocks and destroys estrogen receptors on cancer cells. This cuts off the cancer’s growth signal. Without this signal, cancer cells die. Unlike other hormone therapies, Fulvestrant doesn’t just block estrogen. It also breaks down the receptors entirely. This makes it effective in cases where treatments like tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors have stopped working.

These treatments often lose effectiveness when cancer becomes resistant. Fulvestrant bypasses this resistance by targeting the receptors directly. Doctors usually use Fulvestrant for advanced or metastatic breast cancer. This means the cancer has spread beyond the breast. Fulvestrant is particularly helpful when earlier hormone treatments have failed. It’s often given when tamoxifen or similar drugs are no longer effective.

Fulvestrant is also often combined with other treatments. CDK4/6 inhibitors, such as palbociclib, are frequently used alongside it.  Combining these drugs makes the treatment more effective.

Together, they attack cancer cells through different pathways. This slows cancer growth and improves survival rates.

Fulvestrant Uses

Fulvestrant (Fulvenat) is commonly used to treat:

  • Postmenopausal Women with HR+ Breast Cancer: Fulvestrant treats advanced or metastatic breast cancer in women who have gone through menopause, particularly when other hormone treatments have stopped working. It cuts off the cancer cells' ability to use estrogen, slowing or stopping tumor growth.

  • Combination with CDK4/6 Inhibitors: In advanced breast cancer, Fulvestrant is often combined with drugs like palbociclib, ribociclib, or abemaciclib. These drugs block cancer cell division, making Fulvestrant more effective at preventing cancer from growing.

  • Premenopausal Women with Ovarian Suppression: Fulvestrant can also be used in premenopausal women if their ovaries are suppressed with other treatments, which temporarily reduces estrogen levels. This allows Fulvestrant to work more effectively.

  • HER2-Negative Breast Cancer: In cases where breast cancer does not overexpress the HER2 protein, which means it doesn’t respond to HER2-targeted therapies, Fulvestrant becomes a critical option because the cancer is still fueled by estrogen.

Dosage

Fulvestrant (Fulvenat) is administered through injections.

These are typically given as two shots in the muscles of the buttocks. Patients receive a higher dose in the first month.

After that, maintenance doses are given once a month. This schedule helps the drug reach and maintain effective levels in the body.

It is administered as two 250 mg injections. The standard dosing schedule is:

  • Loading Dose: 500 mg on days 1, 15, and 29 to build up the right level in your body.

  • Maintenance Dose: 500 mg every 28 days after the loading doses to maintain its effects.

For patients with liver issues, doctors may lower the dosage because Fulvestrant is processed in the liver.

Fulvestrant Side Effects

Fulvestrant (Fulvenat) often causes some side effects, though many are mild and manageable. Here are the most commonly reported ones:

  • Injection Site Reactions: You may feel pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site. This happens due to the deep intramuscular delivery of the drug. You might also experience tingling or nerve pain if nearby nerves are affected during the injection.

  • Menopausal Symptoms: You may have hot flashes while taking Fulvestrant. These occur because the drug reduces estrogen levels, mimicking the effects of natural menopause.

  • Gastrointestinal Issues: You might experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. These symptoms result from how your body processes the drug, which can disrupt normal digestive function.

Less Common Side Effects

Fulvestrant can also cause less frequent but more serious side effects. These require close attention:

  • Liver Function Changes: Fulvestrant may raise liver enzyme levels. This can signal liver stress or damage. You need regular blood tests. Watch for yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice) or dark urine.

  • Blood Clot Risks: You have a higher risk of blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism. Fulvestrant can affect blood clotting mechanisms, increasing this risk. Be alert for leg swelling, pain, or shortness of breath, and seek medical help immediately if you notice these symptoms.

  • Vaginal Discharge or Bleeding: You might notice unusual vaginal discharge or bleeding. These changes can happen due to hormonal fluctuations caused by Fulvestrant. The drug alters estrogen levels, affecting the menstrual cycle and vaginal tissue. Additionally, this is common when switching from other hormonal treatments to Fulvestrant.

  • Nerve Damage: Rarely, you may experience long-term nerve damage at the injection site. This can lead to pain or numbness in your legs, possibly due to nerve irritation or trauma from the injection process.

Price and Availability

Fulvestrant is relatively expensive due to the complex process involved in its production. As a biologic drug, it’s made using proteins that mimic those found in the human body. Producing biologics involves advanced technology and strict quality control, which contributes to its high cost.

In regions like the Philippines, Malaysia & USA, Fulvestrant’s price is even higher due to factors like import tariffs and logistical challenges.

However, we at Medixo Centre offer high-quality generic versions of Fulvestrant under the name Fulvenat at more affordable price. Our generics provide an effective, lower-cost alternative, ensuring that you can have access to essential treatments even in areas where the cost of branded medications is prohibitive. Please contact us through E-mail or WhatsApp for quich assistance about our current best price of Fulvestrant. We provides globally shipping.
